What Is Thread Count? A Simple Guide for Bedsheet Buyers

By Hina Collection Team3 min read

Thread count is the number most bedsheet labels lead with, but it does not tell you the whole story. Here is what it measures, what the numbers roughly mean, and how to use it without being misled.

What thread count means

Thread count is the number of threads woven into one square inch of fabric, counting both the lengthwise threads (warp) and the crosswise threads (weft). A 180 thread count sheet has 180 threads in every square inch.

More threads in the same space generally means a finer, denser fabric, but only up to a point, and only when the threads themselves are good.

A rough guide to the numbers

  • Around 120 to 150: light, basic cotton. Breathable and budget friendly, but it can feel thin.
  • Around 180 to 250: everyday cotton. Breathable, durable and easy to care for, a common choice for Indian homes.
  • Around 300 to 400: smoother and finer to the touch, usually with a higher price.
  • Above 400: gains are small, and very high numbers are often achieved by twisting several thin yarns together rather than weaving better fabric.

Why a higher number is not always better

Thread count is only one part of quality. The type of fibre, the weave and the finishing all change how a sheet feels and lasts. A well-made 180 thread count cotton sheet can feel nicer and wear better than a poorly made sheet with a bigger number.

Very dense fabric can also be warmer and less breathable, which matters in a hot climate. Lower and mid thread counts are often more comfortable in summer.

Is 180 thread count good?

Yes, for everyday use. A 180 thread count cotton sheet is breathable, holds up to regular washing and suits warm weather. It is not as silky as a 300 plus sheet, and we would not describe it as luxury. It is honest, comfortable everyday bedding at a fair price.

Our Florida bedsheets are 100% cotton twill at 180 thread count, which is why we state the number clearly on every product page.

How to read a bedsheet label

  • Fibre: look for 100% cotton if you want a natural, breathable sheet.
  • Weave: percale, twill and sateen feel different even at the same thread count.
  • Size: check the dimensions, not just the name. Our King sheet is 108 x 108 inches (275 x 275 cm).
  • Wash care: a sheet you can wash easily is one you will use more often.

The short answer

Use thread count as a starting point, then look at the fibre, the weave and how the sheet is made. For most homes, a cotton sheet around 180 to 250 thread count is a comfortable, practical choice.
