Cotton Twill Bedsheets: What They Are and Who They Suit

By Hina Collection Team2 min read

Twill is a type of weave, not a fibre. A cotton twill bedsheet is made from cotton threads woven in a diagonal pattern, which gives it a soft drape and a sturdy feel. Here is what that means for everyday use.

What is twill?

In a twill weave, each crosswise thread passes over one or more lengthwise threads and then under two or more, and the pattern shifts by one thread on every row. This creates fine diagonal lines in the fabric. Denim is the best known twill.

A cotton twill bedsheet uses the same idea with cotton, so you get the breathability of cotton with a slightly softer, more flexible fabric.

How it feels and wears

  • Soft drape: twill hangs and tucks smoothly because the weave is flexible.
  • Sturdy: the diagonal weave is resilient, so it tends to hold up well to regular washing.
  • Less prone to creasing than a crisp plain weave, so it looks neat with less ironing.
  • Practical: the textured surface is forgiving of everyday wear.

Twill vs percale vs sateen

None is better in every way. It is a matter of feel, and thread counts are not directly comparable between weaves.

  • Percale: plain one-over-one weave. Crisp, light and matte.
  • Twill: diagonal weave. Soft drape and a little more body.
  • Sateen: weave that floats threads on the surface. Smooth and slightly glossy.

Who cotton twill suits

Twill suits people who want soft, easy-care cotton for everyday use. It works well in family homes and guest rooms, and the printed designs in our Florida collection show well on it.

If you prefer a very crisp, cool feel, percale may be closer to what you like. If you want a glossy, silky feel, look at sateen.

Our Florida twill bedsheets

The Florida collection is 100% cotton twill at 180 thread count with a pigment print. Each King bedsheet measures 108 x 108 inches (275 x 275 cm) and comes with two pillow covers of 18 x 27 inches (46 x 69 cm).

How to care for it

  • Wash dark colours separately.
  • Hand wash or machine wash at 30 degrees Celsius.
  • Dry immediately after washing, and tumble dry low if you use a dryer.
  • Do not use chlorine, do not bleach and do not dry clean.
  • Iron with a hot iron if needed.
